Mercury Square Uranus – Shocking News and Weirdos!

This weekend, when Mercury was exactly square Uranus, I got to see an old friend, and we blocked out the whole day to catch up. We went over to a local nerd bar (no music, a lending library, board games, D&D groups – it’s heaven) and made small talk with the bartender before taking our drinks outside and parking ourselves at a picnic table.

We must have made a good impression, because about three hours into our talkathon, where we discussed everything from religion to philosophy to our guesses about Chappell Roan’s birth chart, the bartender came running out to tell us that Biden had dropped out of the presidential race.

We all shared our gut reactions, which quickly led to the three of us disclosing our cultural backgrounds, personal experiences, and how they impacted our politics.

After that, it was game on. About every hour or so, this lady would come out and talk during her smoke break. And each time, the information got more interesting.

• I learned that the band Ghost has a whole world of lore and got recommendations for YouTube deep dives.

• I found out that her autistic son is a trumpet virtuoso with a special love for baroque music.

• I learned that she’d been nominated and passed up for a prestigious award in the military in the early 90s due to arguing that disallowing gay people to join was tantamount to segregation.

And it got even better. When she ended her shift, she came out to sit with us, and that real story began. She is on the competitive bartending circuit, primarily performing at the many steampunk conventions across the country (neither of which I knew existed).  She also does informational panels about the history of alcohol.

Having a degree in history, I was delighted. I asked her to tell me everything she knew, and she gave one of the most interesting lectures I’ve ever heard in my life. Who knew how heavily regulated the tequila making process was, or how hard American gin makers are fighting to get official recognition?

We ended up staying hours past when we intended to leave, and it was entirely worth it.

This moment was the perfect encapsulation of Mercury square Uranus. The day didn’t go as planned. We got shocking national news that threw us for a loop. And then we had some of the strangest conversations of our lives. And you know what? It was great! She was an incredibly fascinating weirdo. One of my people!

Uranus is like that. In opposition to many astrologers, I believe that Uranus is a generally benefic influence. Things need to be shaken up if we’re ever going to grow!
